Instructor Development Course

This is one of the most challenging and rewarding full or part-time careers in the world - a life filled with fun and adventure. Gili Trawangan offers some of the best diving in Asia, and where better to complete your IDC than here with the staff of our instructor courses? Why not make a full or part-time living out of what you enjoy most? We are a PADI 5 Star IDC Center in a beautiful resort location.

If you are new to the PADI system, or unfamiliar with the step's to becoming a successful instructor, let us be the first to welcome you to the world's largest diver training organization and some of the most modern instructional methods and material used in diver education today. The path to becoming an instructor is split into three parts:

  • A four day assistant instructor course
  • Instructor development course, six days (IDC)
  • Two days instructor exam (IE)

On the other hand, if you're already an instructor with another organization, please ask about our instructor orientation course (IOC) which acknowledges your existing teaching experience and concentrates on adapting your skills to the PADI system.

The Instructor Development Course will be conducted by course director, Simon Liddiard, Ayala Cohen and our PADI IDC Staff.

  • Simon Liddiard, co-founder of Trawangan Dive, brings with him eight years experience as a Course Director. Simon has been diving for over twenty two years with eighteen of those years spent living and working in Indonesia. He has consistently trained instructor candidates to the highest possible standards, achieving a near 100% success record while also gaining experience teaching up to the instructor level in Bahasa, Indonesian.
  • Ayala Cohen will be Simon's right hand person for the IDC. She brings with her many years experience in diver education and teaching.

This pack contains information concerning not only the IDC, but also other associated courses offered before and after the IDC itself. Our entire schedule is flexible. A price list is also included which we are happy to discuss with you.

  • There are preparation days if you feel weak in any particular areas, or if you need to complete prerequisite training, such as the MFA.
  • After the IDC, there's a full range of MFA Instructor and Specialty Instructor training courses to choose from.
  • For your convenience, you'll find that there are instructor development courses in March, June, August, October and December, which coincide with an IE on Gili Trawangan.

We are dedicated to providing you with professional service and quality education you'll be proud of. The course offered is designed to do far more than just get you through the instructor exams. We believe you deserve more of an all-round education that will prepare you for a job in a competitive market place. On completion of your course, we also provide a job placement scheme, which includes all of Indonesia. We will also find time to take you on a couple of exciting fun dives during the program free of charge.

Trawangan Dive is not only a fully equipped dive centre but is also a resort. Our bungalows are conveniently situated beside the dive shop, perfectly located for the IDC. If this is not suitable, we are more than happy to help you find other budget accommodation.

Make sure you find the time to relax and enjoy our island, watch the sun go down or take in some of the area's great restaurants and bars. There are also many attractions on Gili Trawangan for you to enjoy. We can organize kayak trips to sunset cruises. Everything is right here waiting for you! If you are interested in taking the IDC with us, or would like more information, please don't hesitate to email us.

PADI Instructor Exams - IE

Instructor Exams are conducted by PADI Instructor Examiners sent from PADI International, or Local Area Offices (in our case PADI SE Asia in Australia).

The IE is a two day evaluation program that tests you, the instructor Candidate in your; Teaching ability, dive theory knowledge, water-skill level, understanding of the PADI System, attitude and professionalism. IE's typically start the evening before the dates stated on the program schedule with an orientation and one of the theory exams. Full details will be given when enrolling. As there are other IE's held around Indonesia, we are happy to schedule IDC's before these, if there are a sufficient number of people to make it viable, and to assist with transport to, and accommodation at, the IE venue. Please contact us if the dates of our programs do not suit you.

To attend an IE you must:

  • Successfully complete an OWSI program or IDC within 12 months from start date of the IE.
  • Have documentation of at least 100 logged dives including experience in navigation, night and deep diving.
  • Present an Instructor Certificate of Completion that has both the OWSI IDC completion date and dive experience sections signed by a PADI Course Director, or provide an IE. Certificate of Participation indicating previous attendance at an IE showing which modules need to be repeated.
  • Present an IE enrollment form and appropriate IE fee.
  • Present a medical statement for a diving medical examination which has been conducted within the past 12 months indicating that the candidate is fit for diving.

An Instructor candidate who is unsuccessful at an IE, must wait at least five days before attending another IE. If unsuccessful at a second IE, the instructor candidate must attend the appropriate components of another OWSI program or IDC (as directed by PADI) with a PADI Course Director, before attending another IE.

It's recommended that instructor candidates are registered for an IE with PADI several weeks in advance. This allows for better planning of staff and logistical needs.
