The PADI Assistant Instructor Course is the first step of the new PADI instructor development course, which was introduced in 2001.
To enroll in the Assistant Instructor Course you must first be certified as a PADI Dive Master, or hold an Instructor level certification with one of the following recreational diver organizations:
- BSAC Club Instructor or higher, CMAS two or three star, FAUI, IDEA, Los Angeles country, MDEA, NAUI, PDIC, SSI, SAA Instructor grade 2 or higher, YMCA, or be a diver with proof of certification in diver supervision and management including proof of diving certification (others may qualify, contact PADI or Trawangan Dive for varification).
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Be fit for diving and submit a medical statement for a diving medical examination, which has been conducted within the past 12 months. A licensed physician must sign the form and state that the candidate is fit for diving.
- Have been a certified diver for at least six months and have completed and logged at least sixty open water scuba dives with documentation of experience in navigation, night and deep diving.
- Submit proof of first aid training and CPR within the last twenty-four months.
- Submit documentation of any equivalent entry-level, advanced, rescue or leadership level certification issued by another recreational diver training organization. (PADI members who have these records on file at PADI do not need to resubmit). If not a PADI dive master, successfully complete the diver rescue skills assessment section of the PADI Dive master course.
Independent learning pre-requisite:
Prior to the start of an Instructor Development Course, Assistant Instructor Course, or OWSI program, you must complete all sixteen IDC Knowledge Reviews. Completing Knowledge Reviews may be accomplished by self-study using the PADI instructor manual, business of diving, law and the diving professional, the best of the under sea Journal and referring to recent undersea journal articles in the instructor candidate workbook. Or you can work together with us on the free preparation days.
What should I bring to the Assistant Instructor Course:
- Three passport sized photos (you can get them from us for 20,000 rp).
- Medical examination certificate.
- MFA completed with the last two years (If not, ask us to get updated).
- Logbook with evidenced of at least sixty dives.
- All certification cards or certificates from Open Water to Dive Master (or equivalent).
- Tuition fees.
- Please let us know beforehand if for any reason you do not have any of the above.
Assistant Instructor requirements:
To be certified as a PADI Assistant Instructor, which you will accomplish easily under the guidance of our skilled course directors and staff instructors, you must meet the following performance requirements:
- Attend the seven IDC Curriculum Components including:
- Course orientation
- Learning, instruction and the PADI system
- PADI discover scuba and snorkeling programs
- Developing knowledge development presentations
- Teaching project AWARE and peak performance buoyancy specialties
- Teaching in confined water
- Conducting open water training presentations
- Present a minimum of two knowledge development teaching presentations and score a 3.5 or higher on at least one presentation.
- Present a minimum of two confined water teaching presentations and score a 3.4 or higher on at least one presentation.
- Present at least one integrated (two skills) evaluated open water teaching presentation and score a 3.5 or higher on each skill.
- Demonstrate competence in performing all twenty dive skills listed on the skill evaluation. Candidates must earn a total of sixty-eight points, with no individual score below that.
- Score 75 percent or higher on the assistant instructor standards exam and have any missed questions reviewed until mastery is achieved. Scores less than 75 percent require a retest, of which there is only one offered per course.
Remember as an Assistant Instructor you can:
- Conduct the academic presentation for any PADI diver course under the indirect supervision of an instructor.
- Teach and certify PADI peak performance buoyancy divers under the direction of a PADI instructor.
- Teach and certify students the Discover scuba experience (pool only).
- Teach and certify student in PADI Medic fist Aid (after completion of an MFA instructor course).
- Teach and certify student in a non-diving specialties, such as the Equipment specialty, Peak Performance Buoyancy.

- All dive gear for use in water 25 - 30°C, including a compass, emergency signaling device
and knife. (Ask for rental cost if necessary) - Sun block, hat, etc.
