There are direct international flights between Balikpapan Sepinggan Airport (IATA:BPN) and Singapore three time a week via Silk Air and between Balikpapan and Malaysia twice a week by Malaysia Airlines. Most people arrive by air. Balikpapan's Sepinggan Airport has frequent flights from Jakarta, as well as commercial services from Surabaya, Banjarmasin and Makassar.

Sepinggan Airport is located on the coast just outside the city of Balikpapan. Airport taxis operate from the terminal and there is a fixed fare depending on the destination.

By Bus

Balikpapan can be accessed from Samarinda, Bontang and Banjarmasin by land through two bus terminals. From Samarinda and Bontang by Terminal Batu Ampar, and Banjarmasin from the other terminal in the Batu Ampar District.

By Ferry

Semayang's seaport serves ferrys from Makassar, Pare Pare, Tarakan, Surabaya, and other eastern parts of Indonesia. This port is one of the busiest ports in Indonesia and the main gateway to Borneo.
